I am a journalist-turned-baker who launched my cottage business, Heimishe Bilkaleh, in August 2021. I created it as a meaningful way to count down to my daughter's bat mitzvah, and chose various charities to which we donated proceeds. The business name pays homage to my grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, whose nickname was Moishele Bilkaleh and whose grandparents ran a bakery in Poland. Heimishe Bilkaleh specializes in traditional Jewish pastry called Rugelach, made from rich, buttery dough filled with sweet fillings such as fruit preserves, nuts, chocolate, or cream cheese. I donate a portion of proceeds to different charities chosen by my daughter.

What motivated you to start Heimishe Bilkaleh?

My daughter's bat mitzvah and honoring my grandfather's legacy.

Can you tell me more about your grandfather's story?

How does Heimishe Bilkaleh give back to the community?

By donating a portion of proceeds from each sale to various charities chosen by my daughter.

What makes Heimishe Bilkaleh's Rugelach special?

Traditional recipe and high-quality ingredients, and charity aspect.
